Candidates for Local Offices

LOCAL OFFICES ON THE 2024 BALLOT

The following local offices will be up for election on November 5th, 2024:

  • Mayor - two year term
  • Council Member - four year term
  • Council Member - four year term

To be eligible to run for local office you must:

  • be eligible to vote in Minnesota
  • have not filed for any other office at the upcoming general election [except as provided in M.S. 204B.06, subd.1 (2)]
  • be 21 years of age or more upon assuming office (by January 1, 2025)
  • have maintained residence in Loretto for at least 30 days before the general election

 

FILING PERIOD - July 30th through August 13, 2024

The candidate filing period opens on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024 at 8:00 a.m. and closes on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.

Candidates may file:

  • during regular office hours (MTW 8am-4pm and F 8am-2pm)
  • during extended office hours (Saturday, August 10th from 9am-3pm; Monday, August 12th from 8am-5pm; and Tuesday, August 13th from 8am-5pm)

 

Ways to File for Loretto City Offices

  • File with the City Clerk in person at City Hall (see dates and times above.) There is a $2 filing fee. The City Clerk is the only city employee who can certify affidavits of candidacy in person.
  • File by mail with notarized affidavit and payment of $2 filing fee. Filing must be received by August 13th.
    • Via USPS send to City of Loretto, PO Box 207, Loretto, MN  55357
  • File at City Hall by putting notarized affidavit and $2 filing fee in the City of Loretto Utility Drop Box located to the left of the Loretto Office Park building entrance by 5 p.m. on August 13th.
 

AFFIDAVITS OF CANDIDACY

Every candidate must file an affidavit of candidacy.  The candidate must complete the following:

  • Candidate’s name as it is to appear on the ballot - must be printed in upper and lower case letters (“Jane Smith”, not “JANE SMITH”)
  • Office sought  (“Council Member” or “Mayor”)
  • Candidate’s phone number
  • Candidate's email address (non-government issued)
  • Candidate’s signature
  • Date the affidavit is executed

Most candidates must include their residential address on the affidavit. If you have a legal reason to keep your residential address private (read the certification on the affidavit for more information), then check the box on the affidavit indicating this fact and complete the Address of Residence form and submit along with your affidavit. Any information submitted on the affidavit is public. Do not write your address on the affidavit if you need it kept private.

Candidates must sign the affidavit in the presence of the City Clerk or have it executed before a notary.

Every candidate must pay a filing fee of $2.00 or submit a petition in lieu of the filing fee.

Affidavits will be numbered according to the order in which they are received.
